This is a process blog for my Space Usagi for the Stan Sakai CAPS benefit auction. The Stan Sakai benefit auction is to help Stan and his wife Sharon. Sharon’s illness requires 24-hour care and medicines that cost more than their insurance covers. I will post again when the action is live. You can also help in various ways here:

I looked at several, but this was my main inspiration/reference piece.
First rough quick gesture drawing to get the basic pose and layout.
Second phase of the rough drawn over the rough gesture, more detail, proportion anatomy ect.
Third phase rough, usually somewhere between 2nd and 3rd phase is what I would send to a client for approval. More detail, tightening up of elements, checking against reference material for accuracy.
Starting digital “pencils” this is pretty close to digital “inks”, I plan on printing it and inking it traditionally as well.
Finished digital “pencils/inks” if this was a digital final piece I would clean it up a bit more.
Threw on some quick gray to help me visualize what I will do in the final version.
This is a scan of the actual inked piece,
The final inked and toned piece. Done on 9×12 Bristol, inked 95% with a Japanese brush pen, the rest with microns. Gray tones done with Copic markers warm and cool grey sets. I didn’t want to use any white out, but I couldn’t help myself and used a little Pelican Graphic White with a brush. It was used mainly on the large black area on his left wrist. I was careful to plan it so those areas would not need shading as the Copics would not work properly over the white.
